How to recognise a "recovery" scam

Warning signs that the service offering to recover your money is the next fraud.

· 4 min read

After a first fraud, victims are often approached by people claiming they can recover the lost funds. Many of these offers are a second fraud.

Typical warning signs

  • Unsolicited contact by phone, email or social media
  • A guarantee that the money will be recovered
  • Claims of working "with" the police, a central bank or a regulator
  • Requests for upfront fees, especially in crypto-assets
  • Requests for remote access to your computer or for your seed phrase

How to check

Search the firm on the warning lists of the FCA, CONSOB, AMF and other regulators. Check the lawyer's registration with the local bar. Ask for a written engagement letter and read it before paying anything.
