Transfers made at the request of an online acquaintance

Repeated transfers to accounts in several EU countries over four months.

Illustrative example

Situation

Over several months a person transfers savings to accounts named by someone met online, who presents the payments as temporary help or as an investment opportunity.

What we do

  1. Mapping of all beneficiary accounts and banks
  2. Assessment of the sending bank's warning and verification duties
  3. Complaint to the bank and, if needed, to the financial ombudsman
  4. Coordination of the criminal complaint

What the analysis can show

Which banks received the funds and in which countries, the pattern of payments, and whether warning signs should have been flagged by the sending bank.

Limits

Payments authorised by the client are treated differently from unauthorised ones. Reimbursement depends on the applicable rules and on the bank's conduct.

Possible routes

Bank complaint; ombudsman procedure; criminal complaint; civil claim if a liable party can be identified.
